Old Money Après-Ski Outfit: The Quiet-Luxury Version

An old money après-ski outfit is quiet, warm and unbranded: a long camel or ivory coat, a cream knit, tailored trousers or dark jeans, leather boots and one real fur piece that looks as if it could have been your grandmother’s. No logos, no neon, and nothing that looks as if it was bought for the trip.

What does “old money” mean on the mountain?

On the mountain, old money is less a trend than an attitude. It is the woman who has skied the same resort for twenty years, whose coat is older than her children and who still looks better than everyone on the terrace. Her clothes are chosen to last, not to be noticed.

The spiritual homes of this look are the old resorts. St. Moritz hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and Kitzbühel has been welcoming skiers for over a century. In both, you will see long wool coats, fur hats and leather boots on women who have clearly worn them many winters running.

The old money après-ski colour palette

Keep to a short list and every piece goes with every other piece:

  • Base colours: ivory, cream, camel, oat.
  • Grounding colours: chocolate, mocha, charcoal, navy, black.
  • One accent, if any: burgundy, forest green or a soft dusty pink.

Tone on tone is the most reliable formula. Camel trousers, an oat knit and a camel coat look rich because nothing is shouting.

Four old money après-ski outfit formulas

  1. The terrace

Navy or black ski trousers, a cream cable-knit or roll-neck, an unzipped navy ski jacket with no visible branding, and a fur hat in a natural tone. Tortoiseshell sunglasses. That’s it.

  1. The village walk

A matching knit set in camel or grey, a long camel wrap coat tied at the waist, brown leather snow boots and leather gloves. The coat does the talking.

  1. Dinner at the hotel

A fine black or ivory roll-neck, tailored wide-leg trousers, a long coat with fur at the collar or cuffs, small gold earrings and a signet ring. The coat comes off at the table, so the roll-neck has to be beautiful on its own.

  1. The fireside

A knit polo or roll-neck and wide-leg knit trousers in one colour, a detachable fur collar if you want texture, and soft loafers or thick socks. Comfortable, but still dressed.

Which fabrics look old money?

Fabric is where the look is won or lost. Natural fibres crease, soften and age well. Shiny synthetics show their age in a season.

  • Wool and cashmere for knits and coats. Double-face wool is the most luxurious coat fabric: two layers woven together, so it needs no lining and drapes softly.
  • Leather for boots, gloves and belts. Brown and black, never metallic.
  • Real fur in one place: the hat, the collar or the cuffs.
  • Corduroy and flannel for trousers on the walk to lunch.

Avoid high-shine puffers, visible logos, technical fabrics off the slopes and anything with a slogan.

Where does fur fit in an old money look?

In small doses and natural tones. A golden or silver fox hat, a pair of fur cuffs on a wool coat, or a fur collar on a knit is exactly right. The colour should look like it could have come from the animal, or close to it: natural, ivory, chocolate, black.

Old money is also about buying once. A well-made fur, cared for properly, can be worn for decades, and plenty are handed down. Faux fur is usually acrylic or polyester, which is a plastic, and tends to look tired after a few seasons. If you want the full picture, our guide to real fur vs faux fur sets out both sides calmly.

The coat that does it all

If you only bring one piece that says old money, make it a long wrap coat. Ours is the Tundra Wrap Coat: double-face wool with a shawl collar that runs all the way to the hem, a tie belt and very full fox-fur cuffs. The fur is only at the wrists, which is exactly the right amount. It falls to the lower calf, so it covers knit trousers and boot tops on the walk to dinner, and it is rated 4.9 by 25 customers. Camel is the old money classic; Ivory, Grey, Mocha and Black are just as quiet.

Old money accessories for après-ski

  • Leather gloves, lined, in brown or black.
  • Tortoiseshell or black sunglasses, not mirrored lenses.
  • Small gold jewellery: studs, a thin chain, a signet ring.
  • A silk square knotted at the neck under a coat.
  • A structured leather bag small enough to carry to dinner.

What breaks the old money look?

  • Logos. Even one large logo undoes the whole outfit.
  • Too much fur. Fur hat, fur collar and fur boots together is a costume.
  • Neon and colour-blocking off the slopes.
  • Brand-new everything. Mix a new piece with something you have owned for years.
  • Thin heels on ice. Elegant women don’t slip. Choose leather boots with a deep rubber sole.

Which resorts suit the old money look best?

St. Moritz and Kitzbühel are made for it: old hotels, wood-panelled bars and a crowd that dresses for dinner. Zermatt works too, as long as your boots can handle the walk. Courchevel and Verbier lean more fashion and more party, so you can turn the volume up there. For the full resort-by-resort mood, see our guide on what to wear après-ski.

Quiet dressing is also the most reliable way to look polished in any cold city. Our guide on how to look expensive in winter takes the same rules off the mountain.

Questions, answered

What is an old money après-ski outfit?

It is a quiet, unbranded way of dressing for the mountains: camel, ivory, navy and chocolate, natural fabrics like wool and cashmere, leather boots and a long coat. One real fur piece, such as a hat or fur cuffs, adds warmth and a sense of heritage. Nothing carries a visible logo.

What colours are old money for skiing?

Ivory, cream, camel, oat, chocolate, charcoal, navy and black are the core. If you want an accent, choose a deep one like burgundy or forest green. Avoid neon, bright colour-blocking and anything metallic.

Is fur old money?

Real fur worn in small, well-chosen doses fits the old money look, because it is about pieces that last and are passed on. A fur hat, collar or cuffs in a natural tone looks inherited rather than bought for the trip. Several fur pieces at once tips into costume.

What shoes go with an old money ski outfit?

Lined leather snow boots or lace-up leather boots with a deep rubber sole, in brown, black or a dark tan. They look classic and grip on icy village streets. For dinner, carry a pair of plain leather loafers.
