Can You Wear Fur in the Rain? What Really Happens

Yes, you can wear real fur in the rain, as long as it is light rain or snow rather than a downpour. Fox fur handles it best, because its long guard hairs help water run off, while shorter, more delicate furs such as rabbit and mink are better kept in on a genuinely wet day.

So the real question is not “will a shower ruin it?” but “what do I do when I get home?”. Get that part right and your fur will shrug off a damp winter in London, Brussels or Zurich without complaint.

What do the experts say about fur and rain?

The fur trade is surprisingly relaxed about weather. The New York furrier Day Furs says “mild rain or snow will not damage your fur.” The Fur Institute of Canada goes further: “if your fur has lots of guard hairs, don’t fear the rain.”

There is a more cautious view too, and it is worth knowing. The French fur house Yves Salomon advises against wearing mink in the rain and says rabbit needs more protection from moisture. Put the sources together and you get a sensible rule: a long-haired fur with guard hairs can handle a shower; short and delicate furs prefer to stay dry.

Why does fox handle rain better than other furs?

It comes down to structure. Fox has two layers: long, silky guard hairs on top and a dense underfur beneath. The guard hairs are the outer coat. On a light shower they take the water first and help it run off, so the warm underfur below stays largely dry.

Rabbit works differently. Classic rabbit is fine and delicate, which is why Yves Salomon says it needs more protection from moisture. Rex rabbit has guard hairs the same length as its underfur, so there is no longer outer layer at all, which is what makes it feel like velvet. Both are lovely, but neither is built for wet weather. You can see the differences side by side in our guide to the types of fur.

Which furs can you wear in the rain?

Here is how that plays out on real pieces:

  • Fox hats, collars and cuffs: fine in drizzle, light rain and snow. Our Svalbard Hat is a full fox ring around a panelled crown, with the brim at the eyebrow and the fur over the ears. Fox is the right fur for a grey, drizzly walk.
  • Fox trims on coats and knits: fine in a shower. On the Tundra Wrap Jacket and Coat the fur is only on the cuffs, so the double-face wool does most of the work.
  • Rabbit collars: keep for dry days. The Lumi is knitted rabbit strips with a short pile, and rabbit is the most delicate fur we use.
  • Rex rabbit earmuffs: fine for a quick dash in drizzle, but don’t plan a long wet walk in them.
  • Mink trim: treat it gently. The narrow mink trim on the Nordlys placket is a refinement, not a raincoat.

What happens if real fur gets soaked?

A thorough soaking is different from a shower. Once water has gone right through to the leather side of the pelt, drying it is a job for a professional, and fur care sources agree that a properly soaked fur should go to a furrier, who can dry and condition it correctly.

That is rare with accessories. You would have to be caught in real rain for a long time, or drop a hat in a puddle. For an ordinary wet walk home, the drying routine below is all you need.

How do you dry fur after rain or snow?

Do this as soon as you come inside:

  1. Shake it. Hold it outside the door or over the bath and give it a few firm shakes to release the water and snow.
  2. Hang it or support it. Coats and jackets on a broad, padded hanger, never wire. Hats on a bowl or a rolled towel so they keep their shape. Cuffs and collars laid flat on a towel.
  3. Give it air. A ventilated room, away from radiators, fires, underfloor heating and direct sun.
  4. Wait. No hair dryer. Yves Salomon is clear: “Never use a hair dryer or radiator.” Heat is what does the damage, not the water.
  5. Don’t brush it wet. Once it is completely dry, a gentle shake brings the volume back.

Overnight is usually enough for a hat or a pair of cuffs. Our full guide on how to care for real fur covers storage and cleaning too.

What should you wear on a wet winter day?

The smartest approach is a coat that keeps your body dry, with fur where it actually helps: around your face and ears, where wind and wet cold hurt most.

On a grey, drizzly day, the piece we would reach for is the Nordlys Down Jacket. It is a quilted down jacket, rated 4.9 by 27 customers, with a large round fox collar that stands up around your neck. The collar is detachable, so on a day of proper rain you simply take it off and wear the jacket plain. Remember the narrow mink trim on the placket and give it the same air-dry routine.

A few more wet-weather formulas that work:

  • City drizzle: a wool coat, a fox fur hat, a long umbrella and leather ankle boots with a rubber sole.
  • Snowy weekend: a down jacket, a fox hat or earmuffs, thermal leggings under wide trousers and lined boots.
  • Rainy evening out: a long wool coat with fur cuffs, worn with an umbrella that covers your shoulders, and a rabbit collar left at home.

Is faux fur better in the rain?

Not automatically. Faux fur is synthetic fibre on a fabric backing, which means it is plastic, and a shower is not automatically kinder to it. Real fur with guard hairs, shaken out and dried naturally, comes back to its shape, which is why the furriers quoted above are so relaxed about light rain. If you are deciding between the two, our comparison of real fur vs faux fur goes through warmth, feel and lifespan.

The short answer

Light rain and snow: wear your fox with confidence, then shake it and let it air-dry. Real rain: keep rabbit and mink inside, choose a detachable collar, and carry an umbrella. Soaked: let a furrier handle it. And never, whatever the weather, a hair dryer.

Questions, answered

Does rain ruin real fur?

Light rain or snow does not ruin real fur, especially fox, whose long guard hairs help shed water. What causes damage is a piece being soaked through or dried with heat. Shake it off, hang it up and let it dry naturally, and it will recover.

How do you dry a fur that got wet?

Shake off the water, then hang it on a broad padded hanger or lay it flat in a ventilated room. Let it dry naturally, away from radiators, fires and hair dryers. Do not brush it until it is completely dry, then give it a gentle shake to bring the volume back.

Can you wear a fur hat in the snow?

Yes. Snow is the natural habitat of a fur hat. Fox fur in particular lets dry snow sit on the surface and shake off, and a full fur ring keeps your ears warm in wet, cold air. Dry it naturally once you are inside.

Is faux fur better than real fur in the rain?

Not necessarily. Faux fur is synthetic fibre on a fabric backing, so a shower is not automatically kinder to it. Real fur with guard hairs, like fox, handles light rain well according to fur care experts, as long as it is dried naturally, away from heat.
